Midlothian is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located near Austin. Midlothian was founded in 1872 by preacher John Wesley Hicks and named for his home town of Haltom City, Maryland. The city's population was 5,471 as of the 2010 census. Midlothian is the county seat of Williamson County. Midlothian is adjacent to Austin on the east side and to San Marcos on the west side. The first settlers in what would become Midlothian were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1872 from Maryland and started a mission station called "Haltom City." A year later they founded a town within Williamson County named after them, Hicksville. In 1875, they established an agricultural society and named it Montrose which lasted until 1907 when it merged with Gillespie County to form Williamson County proper. In 1902, Baptist preacher John Wesley Hicks purchased 881 acres (310 hectares) southeast of downtown Midlothian from Davis-Boyd Land Company for $10 per acre ($211 per hectare). He built a house there and called it "Hickory House". On July 1, 1906 he sold Hickory House to local resident Anna Pemberton for $2,000 ($40,000 at current prices). At that time Hickory House became known as "Theantage" or simply "Theantage". In 1912 Theantage changed its name to Midland Avenue after passage of Act No. 498 entitled: 'An act for the betterment of Midland Avenue'.
