Photo Editing Tools: The History behind OCR Technology When we think about photo editing tools we typically think about Photoshop or Illustrator; these are two common tools used by professionals across a wide range of industries for advanced photographic tasks such as cropping, resizing photos, adjustment layers etcetera. However there were other early photography apps development during the 1800’s which employed Optical Character Recognition (OCR)technology in order to read digital images stored on physical media like paper plates orcards (Figure 2). Back then OCR was known as “photographic transcription” because it was used primarily for copying negatives onto photographic paper for printmaking/typography purposes but also became useful for reading text data from image files (.gif/.jpg/.png/.jpg2 etc.) As digital imagery became more ubiquitous throughout society OCR started becoming more prevalent too with applications like Microsoft Office 2007 starting incorporating its own OCR capabilities within its main editor interface calledoffice@home (Figure 3). At first photocopying was slow due to the need to scan large sheets of paper but with increasing speed photocopiers began making use of newly developed copier toners which caused pictures drawn with small black dashes between lines instead of dots(called checkerboarding)to show up correctly in scans while other pictures showed up with big gaps where lines should have been (-Checkering). During World War II photographer Douglas Slocombe developed an app called Photojojo which allowed users To take advantage Of Automatic Negative Conversion Feature For Japanesenegative films available at local video stores [1]. In contrast photoshop emerged during World War II as a result of military contracts being awarded throughout Europecontaining proffesional demandsfor quickand accuratephotographs[2].
