Midlothian, Texas is a town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,558 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Midlothian is located on the edge of Collin County and serves as its eastern border. Midlothian's main industry is agriculture; fruits and vegetables are the primary crops grown. The first people to live in what is now Midlothian were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1825. They named their new community after a small town in Scotland which they had visited while on their way to trading posts in that country. In 1829, James Waco bought 160 acres (65 hectares) of land grants from Alexander Macgregor for $1,000 cash and built a large two-story frame house on the site which he called "Waco House". He served as mayor of Midlothian from 1830 to 1833 and as deputy sheriff from 1835 to 1840. In 1872, John Fenton donated 154 acres (62 hectares) of land to the city of Dallas for use as an open space parkland adjoiningDallas' newly founded University Park. The city renamed it Westlay Park after him in 1898 when it became part of Dallas' City Limits development east of downtown along Elm Street between Lamar Boulevard and Vine Street. Mayor James Murchison proposed changing the name again – this time to Midlothian – during his campaign for Austin City Councilorship in 1974 but no action was taken until 1978 when Murchison's successor appointed Harry Schieffer as executive director of Parks & Recreation with authority over Westlay Park operations subject only to Council policies concerning public access and use). The current name honors George Washington Morrison (1851-1926), one of Dallas County's earliest settlers who purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) north of downtown near what is today White Rock Road/Highway 6 spanned by Shady Grove Creek on May 8, 1896 from DFW Expressway developer Jock Mahoney for $10 per acre payable within five years or face eminent domain seizure if not paid plus interest at 10%. On November 16, 1912 Morrison donated 207 acres (79 hectares) total including three tracts east–west extending 500 feet (.150 m) each along Elm Avenue under street name "Morrison Heights" – later renamed "Midtown". On July 7, 1913 he conveyed additional parcels totaling 477 acres (227 hectare), including all or part of four tracts lying southwesterly 600 feet (.200 m) along Houston Street between Baylor Road/Highway 183 Business Loop 3rd exits onto IH 35W thence southwest 400 feet (.120 m.) via Decatur Road into Dowling Township where it joins Northfield Drive continuing southwesterly 400 feet (.120 m.) into collin county past Will Rogers Airport then turning easterly 300 feet (.90 m.) past FM 924 toward Ennis Forney . . .
