In 1929, after years of discussion between local officials and developers about potential sites for a new downtown district within the city limits (the North Side), Austin finally agreed to annex Midlothian into its city limits making it one of several towns within Austin that were not originally part of the city but had been incorporated into it over time. With over 2800 residents living inMidtown District (including 512 students at UTEP), job growth has been steady throughout the decades with businesses such as Dell Computer Corporation moving their headquarters out onto Main Street just east of Spindletop Road in 1984; Johnson & Johnson moved their corporate headquarters from Borland Avenue in 1957 to create space for their Health Science Center later that decade; AT&T moved their corporate headquarters from Lamar Boulevard in 1961 to build their first tower at 620 Neches Ave.; Sears Roebuck & Co., opened three stores inside The University Tower complex on Spindletop Road in 1974 beforemovingtheirheadquarterstoHoustonin1980; Home Depot began operations inside The Westin hotel complex on Spindletop Road near Greenbelt Creek early in 1987 before moving into its current location adjacent to Live Oak Mall ; Kress + Company announced plans late last year to open two stores inside Sam’s Club across FirstEnergy Stadium south of Interstate 10 outside Loop 1604 ); while online retailers Amazon and Walmart have both opened locations nearby proximate Interstate 610 , physical retail store anchor Macy’s declined an offer by Live Oak Mall owner Arvest Group LLC to open a second store inside Sam’s Club next door following similar poor sales performance at her original location .
