In 1907, Drury Hite built a large cotton gin near present day Kessler Drive which still stands today as one of Midlothian's most significant landmarks - it continued operation until 1985 when it was demolished due to extensive damage caused by a tornado outbreak which destroyed much of downtown Dallas/Fort Worth that year In 1915, Ewing Gorman bought 1/2 interest in Rancho Guadalupe y Tejanos from Drury Hite for $10,000 becoming owner and operator thereof since then known as Gorman Consolidated Cotton Gin Company Limited Partnership with headquarters located at 309 West Elm Street (now home of Kessler Drive) - among other notable accomplishments during its charter period including: First commercially successful cotton ginning process utilizing modern technology; Construction of world's largest galvanized piling machine used throughout country; Development & Operation of world-renowned Rheem Manufacturing Home Page No 2 Power Plant used primarily for manufacturing electric lights & transformers; First use in country of self-powered air compressor used extensively for local paper production The company went through several changes over time before ceasing operations completely on July 15th 1984 following bankruptcy proceedings amassing an inventory worth approximately $200 million *As a result many significant buildings associated with early Gorman operations have been lost or severely damaged over time such as: Original Cotton Gin Building at 309 West Elm Street - destroyed by 1990 tornado aftermath; Second Cotton Gin building next door (now home of American Electric Power substation) - wrecked by 2001 tornado aftermath; Third Cotton Gin building at 214 Neches Avenue - razed during 2008 tornado outbreak ** currently undergoing restoration project
