Midland is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Midland was Juan de la Cruz on October 28, 1536. He sighted an open field with Mesquite trees and called it San Marcos de Bexar (the "Midshipman's Fort"). The area that would become Midland was explored by parties led by Colonel John Caddo in 1804 and 1811 as part of his exploration of what became Texas. In 1836, General Sam Houston decided to move the capital from Austin to San Antonio because he felt it would be more difficult for Texans to resist American forces if they had their only city within easy reach. Houston chose Midland as the new capital because it was less than three miles from where he believed Mexican troops were quartered nearby at San Fernando de Alba (a site now known as Uptown). In 1840, when cotton trading began to take off in Texas, traders traveled through Midland on their way north to market. By 1850, there were about ninety dwellings in Midlanders small town with nine stores and several agricultural businesses including hogsheads of oilseed futures from England and saltpeter from Newfoundland. A post office opened at this site on November 4, 1850; its name changed to Poston soon after due to competition from other settlements around town which received mail service only sporadically or not at all during those days A sawmill started up in 1865 near present day Village Green; lumber production increased rapidly until 1901 when a fire destroyed most of the mill buildings and mills closed down permanently%. After World War II there continued rapid growth due especially to cattle ranches but also aviation until 2000 when midwestern airlines merged into one airline company named Delta Airlines

In 1836, midland was named for the region that extended from Houston to San Antonio and included present-day Midland and Scurry counties. The area had been occupied by the Nacogdoches Indian tribe since at least 1795. In 1836, General Sam Houston ordered Major General James Fannin to march his army through Midland in order to liberate the Texans from Mexican control. On July 6th of that year, Fannin's army arrived in Midland and began their march northward. A day later, they reached Mission San Antonio de Bacalar (the first mission established in Texas). They were met by a small force of Mexican troops led by Captain José Joaquín Arizmendi. After a fierce battle, General Houston's forces emerged victorious and recapturedmission San Antonio. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded most of Texas to the United States on February 2nd, 1848.
