Midland's history goes back to the 1800s when it was a Hudspeth County seat. The first residents of what is now Midland were Native American people who hunted and gathered food near the present-day downtown area. In 1836, when Texas became an independent state, Hudspeth County was combined with Beaumont County to form Midland County. By 1860, there were only about 20 residents living in Midland and it had no schools or businesses. However, during the American Civil War, young men from nearby Galveston volunteered to fight for Confederate General Robert E. Lee and they quickly began building up a garrison here that would help protect Galveston from Union forces. After the war ended in 1865, many of these same volunteers returned home and began reinvesting their resources into Midland businesses and schools. In 1875, efforts started to build a railroad through Hudspeth and Beaumont Counties and by 1888 this project had been completed providing transportation for goods and passengers between Galveston Island (now Austin) on one side of the bayou baptistaand Houston on the other side! As midtown grew more important within Hudspeth/Beaumont counties due to its location at the junction of two railroads as well as its growing population base (it reached 100 citizens by 1900), its architecture changed significantly over time reflecting this growth pattern: First came significant Greek Revival/Baptist Mission style buildings such as churches; then arrived national Gothic Revival styles such as residences; finally came modernism which characterized most structures built from 1915 through 1930 including post-war adaptations like civic centers etc.. The city's heyday came during World War II when it numbered in the tens of thousands with some working manufacturing plants along IH 10 while others set up shop in new housing developments around downtown (many still exist today).
