By 1850, there were over 100 businesses operating in town including grist mills, wagon trains carrying local coal to New Orleans for export (the first such traffic through Midlanders streets), stagecoach operations and lumberyards employing up to 1,000 people per shift. Today's downtown still retains many reminders of those early days including a restored historic courthouse dating back to1898; a business district anchored by several high-profile restaurants including Longhorn Steakhouse & Brewery (now known as Stonebruery); and a lively nightlife with pubs and nightclubs located near every major arterial artery within easy walking or biking distance
