The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Tarrant County were French traders and fur trappers who journeyed through the area in 1807. In 1870, a railroad was started between Dallas and Fort Worth by entrepreneur George Rogers Clark. The railroads allowed for easier trade with other parts of America and brought new settlers into Midland who founded businesses such as hotels, cotton gins, cattle ranches and mining operations near Red River Valley iron mines dating back to the 1800s. The growth of these industries soon led to development around downtown Midland which housed stores, banks (the first being First National Bank), schools (including an academy later renamed Baylor University) and theaters throughout most of the 19th century before declining during World War I until becoming an important center for munitions production following World War II as well as more recent growth in healthcare and technology sectors.
In 1966-1967 Midlanders successfully spearheaded a campaign to get their city's water supply switched from surface water drawn from local wells to groundwater courtesy of then Mayor Dean Rusk's efforts known as "The Water Wars". This event helped spur economic development within town while also improving public services such as water quality that continues today.
On November 2nd 2009 Midlanders voted unanimously against joining right-to-work statehood because they felt it would hurt their economy without benefits provided by organized labor.
