Midlands Historic District encompasses a significant portion of downtown Midlanders historic district which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes well over 200 contributing buildings dating back to 1886 including two churches (St John's Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church), four schools - Central High School, Bascom Hill Elementary School, Shepherd Middle School & North Park Intermediate School - as well as civic/commercial buildings such as government buildings like county courthouse and library as well as private residences built during various periods between 1886 and 1966 including former Rockefeller Center office building now home to Lone Star Steakhouse & Brewery .
Midland, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Republic of Texas. The area that now includes Midland County was part of the Mexican Empire and it was only after independence was declared in 1846 that Midland County began to develop as a cattle country. The first settlers were miners who dug gold and silver mines in what is now West Texas. In 1848, Midland became the capital of the Republic of Texas and it remained so until its Capital City Act, passed on April 16, 1861, moved the capital from Austin to Midland. Today, Midland is a bedroom community for Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and its largest employer is Texaco Inc., which operates an oil refinery and other businesses.
