In 1836, Midland was the site of a skirmish between American and Mexican forces that led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty ceded California and parts of Texas to Mexico, but it also provided for United States citizenship for all Mexicans living in the area. The town continued to grow as settlers arrived from surrounding counties, and by 1840 it had reached its current size. In 1845, Midland became the capital of Texas after Austin was moved from San Antonio. In 1870, Midland incorporated as a city under the name of "Midland City." By 1900, Midland had a population of over 100,000 people.
