The town site was chosen by Captain John Fenton during his survey of Galveston Bay south of Houston on November 15, 1835 while he was Commandant General of East Texas military District No. 3. Fenton named it "Brazos" after Brazoria County where he had been born and raised (his father had died when Brazoria County was formed). He ordered that all public buildings be called "Municipalidad" or Municipal Institutions instead of their original names until they could be properly dedicated; this included sheriff's departments and post offices throughout the county seat area which would eventually become Midland proper Captain John Fenton surveyed land for Houston Post Road just south of present-day downtown Midland on November 15, 1835 while Commandant General East Texas military District No. 3 . This street later became I-10 . Brazoria County's Congressional First District courthouse stood at what is now Main Street/I-10W about one mile east from where Fenton's surveyor's plat shows Houston Post Road running southwest from its current intersection with US 70/US 281 near Springtown (now Stroudsburg) northeast to modern day Elmendorf Boulevard/I-10W about two miles west from downtown Midlands historical core

Midland's early history can be traced back to 1853 when Humble Company laid out a townsite northwest of what is now Midland Center on land leased from Comanche River Rancho Seco heirs John Humble and James Denton Sr.. By 1881, residents had built six blocks southwest of Main Street along Buffalo Bayou where they began erecting their homes using logs from nearby woods acquired during the construction boom following World War I shortages of lumber resources in America caused by European war involvement. The post office opened in October 1879 with three employees serving 12-hour shifts each day; however due to lack of customers letters were slow arriving until 1880 when mail delivery increased fivefold thanks to improved roads and terminals set up along Railroad Avenue in Dallas (now Greenville Avenue). A telegraph line linking Dallas with Houston was completed in 1886 making it possible for people living near Springtown (then named Post Office Park) east of Midland to send news updates throughout much of Southwest Texas including parts now belonging to Oklahoma City and Tulsa! In 1907, after years being hampered by Prohibition efforts by various factions within society such as bootlegging interests who saw liquor prohibition as an opportunity to increase their profits while limiting competition among themselves (See "1920s: Politics & Alcohol", retrieved 10/9/2018), voters passed an ordinance legalizing beer sales on November 3rd despite initial opposition from law enforcement officials who feltBeerwascontaminatingtheairqualitywithinthecommunity(See"1927: Politics & Prohibition").
