It was founded by Armand Mifflin and named after Midland City in central Michigan, which he had come to visit while on his way to determine whether or not to become a cattleman. The early history of Midland can be traced back to when Armand Mifflin decided to settle down and become a cattleman. He rode out into central Texas with his family and discovered an area that would be perfect for his operation: A valley near Lubbock where there were no trees or hills and plenty of open ground for grazing animals. Mifflin named the new community after himself – "Midland" – and began building his rancho around it. He also built a millrace called the Big White River on what is now Main Street so that water could be transported easily from the river across town to provide irrigation for his cattle operations. Mifflin's rancho soon became one of the largest in Texas and he developed other properties nearby including Pleasant Grove (now Westlake Village), Black Mesa Rancho (now Lakeway Village), Pecos Valley Rancho (now Pecos Heights), Encino Peak Rancho (now Encino Manor), Coyote Hills Rancho (now Coyote Hills Place) and Hackberry Dell Rancho (later renamed Hackberry).
