In 1957, Midlanders gathered at City Hall to celebrate their centennial—a milestone that marked not only their city's anniversary but also its shift from rural economy into an urban one characterized by shopping malls and high-density housing developments around downtown. Throughout much of the 21st century, however,Midlander struggling margins saw continuing job loss as manufacturing transitioned southward acrossstates such as Oklahoma City and El Paso into Mexico or overseas through outsourcing operations run out of factories inside Uptown Dallas or Plano parklands near Irving (and later Arlington) . For all these reasons there has been recent push back against redevelopment efforts spearheaded by Mayor Ron Nirenberg with support from community organizations like Downtown Development Coalition (DDC), Preservation League TX Chapter (PLTX), Homebuilders' Association of Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Area (HAGA), Business Roundtable's Southwest Region Subcommittee on Economic Development (BRT-ED) – resulting primarily in a campaign called "No More Midslope Demolition" that began early this year targeting projects proposed within 1 mile(2 km) northeast of downtown along I-10 corridor northward deep into Collin Creek Valley
