They started out by buying land from the Chisago Creek Band of Ojibwe Indians. In 1907, they organized as the Midland Lumberyard Company with lumberyards in two locations: one near present-day junction of US 287 and FM 1221 and another near present-day FM 936. The company became very successful and soon began exporting logs to other parts of the country. By 1930 it had more than 100 employees and exports totaled $2 million per year; it also built several homes in Midland during that time period. In World War II, Midland was used as a training ground for military personnel from various countries including Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and France. A large hangar was built atrophied during this time for use by U.S Military Aircraft Carrier Command (USMCAC). There were also many businesses set up during this time including an ammunition plant which produced shells for American tanks and planes; a machine shop which manufactured weapons such as automobiles; and a chemical plant which produced gas masks for civilians during wartime emergencies or when war clouds developed over Europe or Japan
The name Midland comes from the old Spanish for the middle of Texas. It was first settled by people who came overland in search of land to farm. The area now known as Midland was first inhabited by the Comanche and Kiowa people. In 1836, General Sam Houston called a meeting to discuss forming a new state out of what were then Mexican lands east of the Rio Grande. At this meeting, Texans decided on Midland as their new name, and they began to settle there. By 1850, Midland had become an important center for trade and commerce in Texas. midlands history
