Midland is located in the Great Plains region of Texas and straddles the border of Kansas and Oklahoma. The city lies on both banks of the Arkansas River, about midway between Wichita and Topeka. The first permanent settlers in what is now Midland were three brothers who named themselves David, Solomon, and Micah after biblical prophets who preached in Israel during the time of King David (about 1000 BC). They founded a log cabin on an east-west irrigation ditch near present day Slaughter Road before moving to their current location in 1827. In 1871 they built a new courthouse at Third Street and First Avenue where it remains to this day. Midland became a city on December 12, 1907 with its incorporation by act of the state legislature. On November 3, 1925 it passed annexation by Wichita which then annexed all other cities within Wichita County including Overbrook (February 1, 1926), Sedgwick (May 15, 1927), Hutchinson (July 10, 1928), Newton (September 3rd 1929), Ennis (November 9th 1930) and phoned itself "Wichita" again on October 17th 1931 when its boundaries were redrawn following the US Census Bureau's "Population Division map". By 1933 there were over 100 incorporated municipalities within Wichita County with a total population of 567,191; however Midland still held third place behind Overbrook and Sedgwick with a population of 105,845 as reported by Forbes magazine that year. On February 5th 1937 Midlanders voted 62% yes for prohibition statewide becoming one of only two cities in Texas to ratify Prohibition less than one year after enactment nationwide. This event helped spur economic development throughout the area which would lead toMidlanders being known as "the ethanol capital" today!
