Midland, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 27,643 at the 2000 census. Midland is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The history of Midland begins with the Donation Land Claim Act of 1836 which awarded 640 acres (2 km²) to James Fenton and John Cline in what is now Midland. The land was granted for the purpose of founding a town on it. On November 3, 1837, Fenton and Cline met with Stephen Austin to request his guidance on how to build their town. Austin recommended they erect a courthouse first and then market their goods and services before building anything else. They did this and founded Midland on December 1st, 1837. In 1840, John Cline sold his interest in MidLAND to James Fenton for $5,000 cash plus 10 cents per acre perpetuity rate which would turn into $100 per year until paid off or sold back to him by Fenton or someoneElse at discretion - effectively becoming an owner/operator of the town until it disbanded in 1906! This property has been frequently used as farmland since it was purchased so there are no definitive boundaries as to where it began or ended up but if you include all of downtown Midlander between 6th Street & Elm Street you have pretty much everything that's downtown today!

The area was first settled by European Americans in the 1800s, when a group of Methodist missionaries traveled through the area. They named the county after Midland, England, where they had been traveling. The first permanent settler in what is now Midland County was James Hogg, who set up a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in 1828. Hogg's post served as an important link between Kansas and Oklahoma Territory. The town of Hockley was founded nearby in 1836, and became one of the largest cities in Texas. By 1840, there were over 60 settlements located within present-day Midland County.
