The first settlers in Mesquite were three men who came from Illinois in 1836 to purchase land east of what is now Midtown Dallas. The growth of Mesquite was due to its location as an eastern terminus for the Butterfield Overland Mail Railway and its role as a transportation center for cattle drives across Central Texas during the early 20th century. The post office at Mesquite opened on November 15, 1907; however, it only received mail four times per month because of distance problems between Dallas and Wichita Falls until 1912 when Richardson built a railroad station nearby which made delivery possible daily. In 1916 Mesquite annexed White Rock Island (containing most of Wichita Falls) to its city limits; White Rock Island was then renamed Texarkana after Texarkana State College which had been established there six years earlier in 1915 by president James Buchanan Polk under his administration as part of plans to open up existing east-central Texas country to agricultural productionfollowing discoveries made during World War I about oil reserves beneath CentralTexas regionscan be developed commercially).
