Hefner also sponsored a year-long cattle drive that resulted in over 1 million head of livestock being transported through Mesquite into North Texas during those years. By 1880, mesquites were grown as a cash crop all across East Texas due to their high quality for oil production. However, because oil Prices plummeted following World War I,mesquitoes began spreading throughout much of EastTexas during this period due to failed Planters efforts to’ control mosquito populations
