In 1921, oil production increased so much that it prompted Mayor Jameson Wylie to call for more money to be put into infrastructure such as roads and water systems; this original plan called for building an airport near downtown but this idea was scrapped because it would have interfered with development around the existing Mesquite Airport which served various military bases until 1999 when they closed down due to budget cuts; however, plans are currently being made again to reopen this airport as an aviation research center while also expanding commuter rail service into town which will cut travel time by up to 50 minutes from downtown Dallas/Fort Worth Airport! The town grew slowly until it became a thriving commercial center in the late 1800s, thanks to its location at the junction of two major trails and its access to water resources. Mesquite's growth ended during World War II when the city was destroyed by an air raid. After the war, Mesquite experienced a renaissance, becoming one of Texas' most diverse communities with a population that has fluctuated over the years from around 35,000 to over 100,000 residents.
