Although many manufacturing jobs have disappeared over time due to technological advances or offshoring of production to China, some light industry jobs remain that provide good wages and are close to homes for many people. This economic diversity has caused some tension between residents of downtown Mesquite and those living along I-10 east of downtown which have seen their neighborhoods decline while those near downtown continue to enjoy high levels of quality public amenities including parks and schools."

Mesquite is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Hudspeth County. The population was 21,564 as of the 2010 census. It is located in East Texas on Interstate 10 about an hour's drive from Dallas-Fort Worth and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mesquite is home to Mesquite Commercial Airport, which serves general aviation and air cargo services as well as local destinations such as Crystal City Park and Chinle Regional Airport in east Mesa County; both airports are part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by pioneers in 1867 when they traveled down Trinity River to find a place to build their rancho (property). A post office called Mesquite was established in 1869, but it was discontinued due to lack of mail service. In 1870, surveyors found that there were two towns named Mesquite: one on the banks of the Trinity River, near present day downtown, and another on land east of town between Buffalo Gap Dam and White Sands Lake. The first town had no residents because it was too far away from any water sources or settlers! In 1871, John Wesley Powell discovered gold at Buffalo Gap Dam while exploring for oil reserves in Hudspeth County – this event helped spur settlement within what would become Mesquite proper beginning in 1872 by men seeking wealth beyond their farmlands. By 1880, there were over 1,000 people living within what would eventually become Mesquite proper with businesses like cattle Rancho de las Palmas running upriver past current day downtown into what is now open space adjacent to Stull Air Force Base; this area still contains many early pioneer residences including Dawson House #1 & #2 which are listed on the National Register Of Historic Places (#7018), just south of Central Avenue near State Highway 183/ US 6 exit “Olde Hickory” today’s Main Street where most stores line 8th Street since that original street alignment changed starting around 1930 when FM 930 split off I-10 concurrent with I-35W reroute; prioritizing truck stops making way for shopping centers along 8th Street during its routing through today’s city streets) . But back then things didn't always go according to plan! One infamous rivalry among early settlers involved a group led by James Robertson who built a jail near present day downtown against efforts by others who wanted much more room for development - until finally all rivals were put out OF BUSINESS BY MR RODNEY HIMSELF JUST BEFORE HIS OWN DEATH IN 1886!!! All told though some interesting times ensued with Growth really accelerating thanks largely to railroad construction…during WWII mesquite became one example how Wichita Falls got its start right here folks!!! Finally ending JFK's exploration days later wasn't without cost either as mesquitoes got nasty during his visit causing an increase incidence OF malaria (or something similar) among locals ↑
