Smith started making revolvers for the town of Mesquite and soon became known as the king of handgun makers in Texas. In 1903, mesquite native and rancher William Mize founded what is now West Point Arms Company Ltd., which manufactured shotguns, rifles and handguns under two different names until 1953 when it changed its name to Winchester Arms Corporation. In 1957, Winchester merged with Remington Firearms Company to form American Armory Corporation (AAC). AAC continued manufacturing handguns into the early 2000s when it was acquired by Colt Industries Incorporated (CIO). Mesquite's gun industry owes much to its partnership with Baylor University which began providing faculty members with rifle training courses in 1921 along with arms ammunition and tools needed for crafting firearms from 1836-1921. Mesquite, Texas is a small town located in the far southwest corner of Texas. The town was founded by Texans who crossed the Rio Grande in 1836. In 1840, Mesquite became the seat of Hudspeth County, and it has remained that way ever since. The town was originally named for a mesquite tree, but it changed its name to Mesquite after troops burned down an Indian village near the tree in 1847. The first settlers in what would become Mesquite were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1835. By 1840, there were about 20 families living hereabouts. A school was built in 1841 and was known as the Black Horse School until it closed in 1865 because of budget problems. A post office was established here in 1845 and continued to serve until 1898 when mesquite became an independent city under Texas statehood. Mesquite experienced some real growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s when many new businesses were established including several hotels and restaurants which helped contribute to its nickname “The Gateway to Dallas”. One of the most famous residents of Mesquite during this time period was Jack Kemp who played football for local teams before becoming a long-time Representative from Los Angeles County. After his retirement from politics he moved back tomesooth into old age where he died on November 15, 2002 at the age of 92 years old
Mesquite was founded in 1846 by George Bird Mesquite and his wife, Lillie. The town is located in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. In 1871, Mesquite became the county seat of Hudspeth County. It was officially annexed to Austin on February 14, 1975.
