In 1918, mesquite became one of the first cities in Texas to light its own gaslights with natural gas provided by local farmers. During World War II, mesquite became one of the largest oil producer cities in Texas due to its proximity to Midland Oil Company production fields. In 1951, mesquite acquired its present name after it was annexed by Austin; at that time it had a population under 50 thousand people (). As Austin grew larger and more diverse than mesquite, many residents decided they did not want their community absorbed into downtown Austin or become part of the rapidly growing suburbia around it – they wanted their own community within walking distance (or "mesquito" as many locals called it)of their homes! With this goal in mind, Mesquitoland Inc., developer/owner since November 1978 saw potential for growth within what were then two small townships adjoining downtown Austin: environs surrounding Slaughtertown Union Township would have an estimated population increase from 2400 individuals over 10 years from 1984-1994 alone if not for annexation resulting in only an incremental 2% increase (+/- 3%) despite some very high price tags associated with redevelopment such as $1 million per acre for surface parking lots needed for riverfront development). On July 11th 1994 City Council passed resolution 9998 reaffirming intent to annex adjacent township unincorporated areas eastward along Uptown Boulevard between Shepherd Road (now Main Street) and Live Oak Drive; this annexation led directly theretofrom Slaughtertown Union Township which contained approximately 6000 citizens (+/- 800 since 1980), making annexation necessary because there was no other way forcknowledge or control growth within that township without violating zoning ordinances prohibiting new construction on existing housing developments west thereof beyond 3000 feet (. . .) . . . This action accomplished what numerous petitions failed to achieve over more than 25 years: incorporation into Downtown Austin through vote rather than acquiescence via ordinance change usurping charter rights granted thru original incorporation agreement even though those same rights may be withdrawn any time at will pursuant TO Zoning Ordinances now extant!
