Mesquite experienced significant growth during World War II as military personnel stationed there helped contribute significantly to Allied victory in Europe. Many local residents also worked in defense industries throughout the war years such as Boeing Aircraft Company (now Lockheed Martin), Raytheon Missile Company (now Raytheon Co.), Texaco Refining Company (now ExxonMobil) and Dow Chemical Corporation (later DuPont). After 1945, mesquite slowly regained most of its lost business partners until the 1990s when shale gas extraction began making Lone Star State home to more Fortune 500 companies than Austin or Dallas combined - making it one of America's fastest growing metropolitan areas since 2000 according to Forbes Magazine .
