When one thinks of Mesquite, Texas, one might think of the vast expanse of open pasture that surrounds the city. However, until recently Mesquite was home to a rich and long history in binoculars. The city was founded by Texans in 1836 as part of the Republic of Texas. At first it was just a small Mormon town, but over time it grew into a major center for Anglo-American trade and culture. In 1885, Mesquite was founded as a post office in what is now the city of Richardson. The town was named for General James Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas. In 1902, Mesquite became an independent city under the administration of Mayor John Witherspoon. In 1917, Mesquite hosted its first international exposition, The Great American Exhibition. It was also during this time that the mesquite oil well came into production. In 1932, Mesquite became an all-city municipal government with a mayor and five council members. That same year saw the opening of City Hall and new police department buildings. The 1930s were a time of hard times for Mesquite; however, it managed to overcome many challenges including economic depression and World War II (1939-45). In 1948, City Hall was destroyed by fire. However, within months new City Hall had been built at Seventh Street and Main Avenue with help from private donors. During the 1960s and 1970s there were several high profile incidents in which Mesquite residents took part such as the Battle of Black Mesa which occurred on January 16th 1966 when three students from Baylor University were taken hostage by members of the Black Mesa Rangers Bandits; or siege events that took place between 1969-1970 known as "The Christmas Invasion". On October 15th 1995 two gunmen opened fire on a group of people gathered outside City Hall Annex after making threats against Mayor Ron Nirenberg's wife; resulting in four deaths and thirteen injuries both inside and outside City Hall Annex before attackers surrendered without further violence two days later on October 17th 1995
Mesquite, Texas is a small town in east-central Texas that straddles the border of Mexican and United States federal lands. It's located just east of the Comanche County line, about 30 miles north of Dallas and 100 miles south of Austin. The first people to live in what is now Mesquite were the Hennepin Massasauga tribe, who called it Quién Loca (literally "Where I am"). In 1836, pioneers from Illinois arrived at what is now Mesquite and founded a trading post called Fort Worth. The following year, Mesquite was organized as a townsite with A.J. Cooke as its first mayor. In 1881, mesquite became an official U.S. Territory after Texas Annexed it from Mexico. The town thrived during the early years of Americanization, when goods brought in by railroads were sold here for cheap and workers came to build roads and farms. Business went bad during World War II because ofAllen Dulles' decision to send troops to fight in Europe instead of fighting Axis Germany; however, mesquite bounced back during the postwar period with development including the creation of two universities: Baylor University in 1961 and Texan Tech University in 1996 Today, mesquite is a thriving community with many businesses and residents who are proud members of their local government

After the war, Caldwell donated land to the town of Mesquite for development. Mesquite developed quickly as a farming community because of its location near key I-10 highway exits. The town soon became an important trading post because it supplied goods to nearby Amarillo and Wichita Falls. In 1941, mesquite became part of Dallas County when it was created from parts of Dallas andtxanawana counties. As Dallas County grew more populous, mesquite lost its importance as a farming community but continued to be used for trade purposes until it merged withDallas County in 1965. The City Council created the Master Plan for Downtown Development in 1969 whichcalled for demolition of many old buildings in order to make way for new businesses and residences downtown
