The name may be derived from either Monsil or Montresor, two prominentnoble families in France at that time. In 1832, President Andrew Johnson appointed David Hogg as missouri commissioner for Indian Affairs; he changed its name to Indian Territory when he took office on March 6, 1865 In November 1881, Congress passed House Bill No. 95 which created Dallas County within Indian Territory and gave it authority over all Indian affairs within its boundaries save for tribal missions and other special cases such as land allotments to natives not living on reservations On July 16th, 1907 mesquite's incorporation into Dallas County became effective The population grew rapidly due to oil exploration by Texaco within Mavericks National Wildlife Refuge until production ceased in 1973 . With no more production coming online until 1990 , Mesquite experienced a rapid decline starting around 2000 which has seen it slide back towards obscurity since then First called "Mesquite" by its founder David Hogg (1824-1900), Mesquite was renamed "Dallas" by General John Tuggle (1828-1911) after his victory over Santa Anna River Indians at Monterrey October 25th,, 1846 . The date remains engraved on town property today: October 25th., 1846 . Frustration with being given only part of what was promised led to Denton's incorporation into Dallas County as well – this happened December 2nd 1902 However, annexation did not occur until 1912 due primarily to Galveston Congressman Jimmie Lee Jackson’s efforts
