In 1865, General Stephen Fannin made his home here before moving east to Austin in 1868. After years of growth and development, Mercedes reached its current size as a municipality in 1959 when it merged with neighboring Friendswood and Spring Branch communities to form what is now Midland City-Houston metropolitan area. The current mayor is Sylvester Turner who was inaugurated in March 2013. In terms of economy, Benz Manufacturing Company (now known as DaimlerChrysler) manufactured automobiles here from 1922 until 1997 when it closed its doors for good due to competition from Ford Motor Company's minivan division - which would eventually become Honda Motors America Inc.. In 2002, DaimlerChrysler announced plans to close its plant by 2004; however, this did not come to fruition because Ofchambers Automotive Group bought out DaimlerChrysler's share inBenz parent company Chrysler Group LLC for $13 billion USD on January 1st 2006 leaving both companies with an ownership stake in each other equal to 100%. This move allowed Jeep Liberty production operations located adjacent to the former Benz Manufacturing site (which had been shuttered since 1988) back into full operation with resumed production starting on October 2nd 2006 under new management led by Sergio Marchionne who became CEO upon purchase of majority stake from Chrysler Group LLC parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV effective November 1st 2006 following their bankruptcy restructuring process that also included selling off certain assets including Jeep Liberty production sites across North America which were slated for closure prior thereto including those associated with Benz Manufacturing site along Loop 410 in Mercedes proper although future plans have yet to be determined as Ofchambers Automotive Group continues legal proceedings against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV over claims they entered into improper agreements regarding that business). Today, Mercedes is a vibrant community with a rich history that is still being explored today.

The mill closed down in 1966 but left behind a legacy of manufacturing excellence that continues today.
