Mercedes is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlements in what is now Mercedes were made by Europeans on the site of present day Mercedes in 1836. The name "Mercedes" originates from German and means "water droplet." A post office called Mercedes was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. A railroad station was built at what is now downtown Mercedes by the Houston Railroad Company on December 12, 1875. The old train depot still stands as a museum within walking distance of the town center. In 1901, when Tarrant County was created, Mercedes became its seat and continued to be so until 1959 when Arlington took over that role. In that year, a new courthouse building was constructed south of downtown which remains serving as the county seat today. The first school built within what is now modern-day Mercedes came about as part of a larger project to build schools throughout Tarrant County back then called the School District No. 7(now known as district 21). On October 15th 1892 local citizens met to organize themselves into an organization for educational purposes with Rev Wm Halsey as their first president and Jno Ivey as secretary/ treasurer/ trustee./ One hundred thirty boys from nine surrounding towns attended this meeting./ Dr Jno Ivey donated his home on corner High Street & Second Avenue for use as a schoolhouse for grades Primary thru 8th grade./ After Dr Ivey's death (1893), his widow Mrs Jane Ivey moved into this home until 1915 when she sold it to Mr Oscar Ladd who used it from 1916 thru 1951 for various purposes including storage / For instruction during World War II Ms Eva Suttles leased this house also next door from Mr Ladd & continuing use through 1957/ From early 1957 thru 1966 it housed Ft Worth Air Force Base Officers Mess.- In 1978 Mrs Vera Baird moved into this house after her husband retired (& resided there ever since) & continues living there enjoyng all its many services which have included conversion into 4 bedroom plus 3 bathrooms Residence Hall currently houses numerous programs such As Kiwanis Club / Girl Scouts program Oldenburg Singers group Live Arts events Allianted with Douglass Community Theater
