Mercedes was founded on November 3, 1872 by Hernando De Soto and his group of Spanish-speaking Texans as a small mission town named after Saint Mercedes de Cerveza. In 1880, the first post office in Mercedes opened with 100 residents. The city's economic development began when the Dodge Brothers ramified their dealership throughout central Midland County during the early 20th century. By 1922, it had become one of America's leading automobile manufacturing centers with plants located at locations including downtown Mercedes and near I-10 and U.S. Route 69 (Old US 69). The company ceased operations in 1927 but continued to be headquartered in downtown until its sale to Chrysler Corporation in 1957. The current cityscape began to take shape following World War II when many high- income Germans moved into Midland County because of postwar reconstruction opportunities available in the area following Germany's defeat in World War II. This influx of newcomers led to new businesses being established along Interstate 10 and U.S Route 69 and also saw growth of retail malls such as Sears Pointe Plaza which anchored what would later become called "Midland Avenue" corridor between downtown Benzie and rural areas east of I-10 across from Lake Michigan Boulevard (now Highway 622).
