Mercedes, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. It was founded in 1881 by John D. Rockefeller and named for his wife, Mercedes Benz. The city had a population of 174,651 as of 2010 according to the Population Estimates Division of the US Census Bureau. In 2012, Mercedes became part of Austin metropolitan area, which has a total population of 3 million people. In 1913, James Prentice Hutton developed an optical apparatus that he called "Hutton's Mirror." This mirror consisted of two mirrors with their lenses set at right angles to each other and focused through a special eyepiece onto a screen on which images were displayed. The device was used by military officers to see enemy troops before battle and also by astronomers to view celestial objects during daylight hours. In 1935, Lewis Mumford developed what is now known as "Mumford Cray" after his father-in-law Harry Mumford who funded its development. This machine featured two large reflecting mirrors placed so that they could be focused on one another directly without the need for any eyepieces or screens and it was used to examine patterns on photographic plates which were then used to create maps or charts
