When Sam Houston claimed this land in 1836, he named it for his mother-in-law's ancestor who had immigrated from Mercedes, Germany. Many of the early settlers in Mercedes were families of German immigrants who arrived during the days of Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The first post office in Mercedes was established on March 7, 1881. In 1907, a community center was built as part of a larger project called "Mercedes Park." The park served as a place where citizens could gather and play games before going to their homes or businesses. After years of use and neglect, the community center was sold and donated to Hudspeth County government in 1978. Now known as "The Hub", the center is used for cultural events related to its history as well as meetings and other purposes such as education programs about local history. During World War II, many natural resources were developed near present day Mercedes due to its location on I-10 between Austin and San Antonio (the so-called "Oil Route"). This led to an influx of people into Mercedes over time which has caused some problems with regard to traffic congestion around downtown areas today. One solution being considered is building a new freeway interchange adjacent to downtown that would relieve someonal congestion while also providing more direct access from I-10 southward into town limits
