In 1927, the town incorporated and changed its name to Mercedes-Anchorage. On May 12, 1931, it again changed its name to Mercedes after Kaiser Wilhelm II's visit to America. In 1937, it became an independent city and reverted back to its original name on December 8th of that year. In 1961-1962 when Waller County was split into two parts - Hamilton County and Bexar County - Mercedes had become an unincorporated community within Bexar County proper but with full municipal rights due to it being part of Hamilton County until that time. However on November 30th 1962 while all municipalities were changing their names they reverted back to their original names once again becoming an unincorporated community within Waller County proper once again with only municipal rights On July 15th 2003 Hurricane Rita hit neighboring Corpus Christi killing more than 100 people making landfall there as well as causing extensive damage throughout Waller and Harris Counties
