In the early 1800s, when Mercedes was still a small town, residents had to take care not to get their hands on too many guns. Firearms were banned in most of Texas at that time, so it's no surprise that gun slings history in this town begins with a weapon used for protection rather than offense. After World War II ended and America entered into an economic recession, sales at nearby dealerships decreased because customers could not find anything they needed or wanted within their states' borders. In 1953 Merkel announced plans for construction of Interstate 30 which would connect Dallas and Houston; this project created muchneeded jobs for locals who had been displaced by development around Interstate 70/I-30 corridor (which today includes downtown Houston). The 1990s saw some struggling times for Mercedes but eventually beganto improve thanks to government investment coupled with marketing efforts spearheaded by Mayor Dave Bratbauer along with local philanthropy (such as giving away free cars). These initiatives have resulted in multiple high-end real estate developments being constructed within the city limits - exemplified by Montero Place / Sheraton hotel located on I-10 west of downtown.; however these developments typically do not result in significant job increases since most employees are contract employees or part time workers who receive meager paychecks compared to those working at larger commercial properties closer unto Interstate 10 freeway exit labeled "downtown." Overall, recent trends suggest that while there is definitely turbulence going on insideMercedes;; overall it has shown signs of improvement over time despite occasional setbacks; highlighting just how resilient tiny towns can be when faced with challenges from big cities like Dallas & Houston

They quickly developed a local economy based on agriculture, mining, ranching, transportation (including stagecoaches), trade (mainly with Austin), and manufacturing. / / / In 1916 when Texaco leased land near present-day Mercedes for exploration of oil reservesTexaco's new Head Executive Vice President Owen Ketchum decided to establish a post office there named after his late father-in-law David Starr Jordan who had been killed in action at Iwo Jima during World War II./ / / In 1936, Driscoll Bros., ranchers who grazed their stock hereabouts on about 25 acres close enough for milk delivery by horseback took out $5 000 Iowan money loaned them against their collateral goods purchased from Lewis & Clark Steel Co., Incorporated which also built a smelter within sight at what is now known as “Jordan’s Mill” where much steel was produced until WWII./ / / At some point between 1915 and 1926 General Motors Corporation bought some 5 square miles flat bottomed acres just east of what is now downtown Merkelstrom off US Highway 80 opposite Germanna Bluff Road where they erected 3 sheds with 6 stories each plus 2 more buildings or garage lots totaling 56 feet frontage on 4 acres.- This property was then divided into GM Lots No 1 thru No 6 being sold off piecemeal throughout ensuing decades along with rights to mineral water under surface claims.– A prelude to later cityhood – When FMcorp moved its operations from Detroit Michigan during 1978 buyout they conveyed title deeds titles deed #4 dated 12/10/1964 among other documents contained hereinto map plat sheets showing lot boundaries…..According– plats are back up online if you google: MERCEDES TEXAS CITYHOOD PLAT SHEET Mercedes began having trouble growing corn because it didn't have good soil quality like other parts of Texas did.(Wright Brothers) A group of farmers organized themselves together called "the Farmers Union" to try solve this problem using irrigation systems that would move water uphill from rivers downwind so crops could grow.(Redevelopment Authority). After years of hard work they finally solved the problem but lost many members along the way because peopledidn't want their homes taken away.(Farmers Association). Eventually they got help from Houstonians who donated land(City Council) so they could build something better than just a canal.(National Agricultural Research Center). Today we enjoy beautiful architecture such as: Trinity Lutheran Church (1924), Roosevelt High School (1947), Methodist Episcopal Church (1968), United States Post Office - Merkelstrom Annex(1974)(Avenue O'donald Reagan Presidential Library). Mercedes has seen various incarnations throughout its history including early settlement by Dutch colonists; period of agricultural production; annexation by neighboring Medina County; periods characterized by industrial production; cityhood before becoming a rural community; multiple changes leading up to its current form; continuing contributions made by locals since incorporation into Houston

The population of Mercedes grew from 9,000 to over 100,000 during the 20th century. In 1998, Mercedes County merged with Montgomery County to form the new Metro Houston area.
