Mercedes, Texas is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community site for Mercedes was named after General Hernando de Soto's forces which arrived in 1835 looking for new land to conquer. When they reached this area, they named it after King George II of England who had recently been ousted from his throne and was living near modern-day Houston. The name "Mercedes" means "water source." A post office called Mercedes was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1993. The first school opened in 1905 when Mrs. Sarah Goodspeed started teaching a one-room schoolhouse on her farm east of present day Mercedes Lake. She later donated the land to McLennan County for the construction of a high school that would serve both students and county officials. The first building on the campus (now home to McLennan Community College) was completed in 1909 and served as the high school until 1959 when it became known as South High School For Boys/ girls which remains today as one of four schools providing education within South McLennan ISD boundaries
