Mercedes is a town in Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 438 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Mercedes" comes from the Spanish word "mesquite," meaning "hay." The first settler in what is now Mercedes was John Denton in 1836. By 1840, there were ninety-six people living in Mercedes. A post office called Mercedes was established in 1851 and remained in operation until it closed in 1912. The first school for white children was built near present day Gatewood Drive and McCullough Road on August 24, 1876. When State Highway 30 (SH30) was created through Travis County in 1922, state troopers drove locals to school using their horses and buggies. School consolidation began around this time with three schools opening: Park View (1927), River Oaks (1929), and Green Meadows (1931). In 1938, Mercedes had four churches: Baptist (1897), Methodist Episcopal (1900), Presbyterian (1902), and Roman Catholic (1907).
