Mercedes is a town in Kerr County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Arvada–Wichita area. The first settlers in Mercedes were farmers who came to the area from Kentucky in 1851. A post office was established in 1852 and named for Mercedes Creek (now called White Rock creek). The town began as a small settlement until 1860 when the railroad arrived and made it easier to get to jobs near Amarillo. In 1870, the community developed into a small city with its own police department and fire department. In 1903, Mercedes annexed neighboring towns of Arvada and Wichita which gave them their own village square with a school and grocery store. The annexation also provided new water supplies for both cities which helped Mercedes become an important economic center during this time period. In 1916, after World War I ended, Mercedes became one of ninety-six communities nationwide that received federal assistance under Reconstruction Acts to rebuild following the war. This assistance included money for new housing, jobs, schools and other needs such as streetlights and sewers. Many people living in these areas left because they could not afford unnecessary costs or because they felt they had no choice but to join the rebuilding efforts. The town's industries during this time include printing mills (1921), cattle drives (1925), chicken processing plants (1928) and cotton gin production (1929). In 1936, local resident Don Hennessey founded Denny's restaurant chain which continues today as one of America's largest food service companies
Mercedes, Texas is a town in and the county seat of Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock–San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Mercedes" comes from the Neches River which flows through the town and gives it its name. The first settlement in what would become Mercedes was made on July 24, 1836 by Major General James Fenton and Confederate Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith as a result of a treaty between these two armies. The original community was known as Ford's Plains because John Ford built his Federal style home there in 1836. On November 6, 1843, James Hogg settled around to the east in what would become Huntsville before moving to Mercedes about four years later on October 9th of that year. By 1850, “Mercedes” had grown sufficiently large for another post office to be established (Fording’s Plains Post Office), with Wm Gassner serving as its first supervisor. In 1865 when Houston became an independent city, “Merrices” amalgamated with other towns within Hudspeth County in order to form a new city government under Mayor Addison Youngblood. When annexation into Houston occurred on December 15th of that year (see Houston Annexation Act), “Merrices” reverted back to Hudspeth County once again effective January 1st of 1907 In 1927 Mercedes voters passed a proposition allowing liquor licensees within their limits without having to sell tickets at private residences or businesses located within them; this action helped increase tourism in our small town during that time period
