This paper is about the history of Mercedes, Texas. The town was founded in 1881 by Immigrants from Spain and Italy. It was named after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria who donated land to the town. In 1902, the first school opened in Mercedes. The town grew rapidly and by 1907, it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1911, Mercedes became an official city with its own government. The city developed a strong economy thanks to its heavy industry and agricultural sectors. In 1942, during World War II, Mercedes was heavily bombed by the Japanese military. Some of the buildings in the town were destroyed but most of them still stand today as Memorial Towers. During World War II, many European immigrants came to work in Texas’s heavy industries such as munitions plants and steel mills. Many Mexican immigrants also worked in these industries at this time. Mercedes has experienced various periods of growth and decline since its inception as a small community back in 1881- until it finally attained city status post-World War II when annexed by Austin in 1951 due to rapid growth rates within Austin’s limits (Baker). As one might expect given its location on Interstate 35 between Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston/Waco – both major metropolitan areas – there has been significant economic development throughout its history (see table below). The area now called “Mercedes” formed part of what is now Medina County when it was organized under Mexico City Government on February 22nd 1836 (Fowler). On July 16th 1850 Akins County was Organized from parts eastward of Medina River with office at San Antonio de Bexar(Fowler 2) .On November 3rd 1860 sold out for $2 million from Presidio Surveyor General Don Carlos Sanchez Ramirez et al.(Fowler 3) .Don Fernando de la Peña y Peralta raised $1million from citizens & strangers thru many sales lots & donations(Densmore Eagle 9) .On October 25th 1870 listed boundaries for El Paso County including present day Medina County(Morgenstern 792) .It appears that some sort of annexation took place because on October 25th 1870 El Paso County boundary had shifted eastward 10 miles due westwardcession granted by Gov Manuel Micheltorena(Morgenstern 793-794) which included present day Medina County as well as adjacent Tarrant Counties With annexations taking place along I Highway35 corridor we can assume that early undocumented settlers were brought through or near present day Houston/Travis county area then annexed into Travis Co., later Harris Co., then Chihuahua Co., etc.(Langston 5). Most likely prior to 1851Mexican settlers were living around Fredericksburg Rd./IH 35 corridor where they encountered white Texans first before moving inland towards what is now Medina Co., TX Most likely following purchase or donation by presidion surveyor general don Carlos Sanchez Ramirez et al circa 1860 -1870 more Mexicans moved inland towards US borders via Fredericksburg Road/IH 35 corridor
