James Withers named his settlement after King George III of England because he felt that England had done much for him during the American Revolution which began two years before he arrived here inHouston.(1) In 1871 James Withers moved his family from Houston to what is now Meridian where they started a grocery store called "The Mercantile" which still stands today.(2) From this store small businesses grew rapidly with many people selling products out doors until about 1918 when WWI led to a decline in business because so many men were drafted into service.(3) However during World War II production picked up as munitions manufacturers produced planes and tanks at nearby Baytown(4) Finally starting in earnest post-war growth happened thanks largely to Interstate 20 which connected Harrisburg with Houston making it easier for goods transported between these two cities(5) This economic boon continued through most of the 1990's as suburban housing developers built more homes on what had once been farmland.(6) After 9/11/2001 increasing federal regulation led some job losses within defense contractor firms although these have reversed somewhat over time.(7)(8)(9)) Today Mercedes’ economy depends heavily upon its neighbor Austin’s services sector (and related tourism), professional services, engineering & technology businesses, education & research organizations headquartered elsewhere in TX or internationally (eXtreme Motorsports Park outside Huntsville), blue chip agricultural products exports from neighboring counties including Cornwell Farms LLC., massive construction projects undertaken by government agencies (Structure Steel works being completed adjacent Downtown), local trucking Firm United Trucking Co., medical equipment manufacturer HCI Medical Incorporated., airplane parts manufacturer Raytheon Company Aircraft Division headquartered just outside town limits; all-new retail development announced recently annexed by town including several large box stores slated to open soon; various types of industrial users existing close by providing essential goods & services: AutoZone provides gasoline; ServiceMaster manages maintenance on home heating systems; Home Depot stocks both home appliances and tools; Auto Parts Unlimited sells tires etc.; numerous smaller businesses provide necessary needs & services: daytime bakery provided snacks & coffee while library operates late nights; water softener provider supplies rechargeable water storage tanks sans meters

In 1881, when the United States acquired Texas from Mexico, the new state was named for Mercedes, a small town in Coahuila and Baja California. The name “Mercedes” is derived from the Spanish word “mesa” meaning bench or platform. In 1916, the name of the state was changed to Texas after its admission into the Union as a U.S. state. A year later, on January 6th, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson announced that Texas would become an independent country with its own flag and anthem- both played at Lone Star rallies across America. The first known reference to what is now Mercedes comes from Mission Santa Cruz de Tamaulipas in 1769 when Antonio Vallejo noted that there were live oaks near what is now downtown Mercedes on the banks of an estuary called Nueces River. From here he took his daughter and her husband Diego Lopez (the founder of La Feria) upriver to trade goods with Native Americans and document their land holdings in this area. There are also references to people living in or around what is now Mercedes dating back even further- some say as far back as 600 BC! And it wasn’t until 1881 when a group of Texans decided to settle down in this area after hearing about opportunities for Rancho Seco land south of San Antonio – which included part of today’s city limits! During early days Of Texas there were few formalized laws & ranchos were run by men only- so many ranchers did things their way just like southerners did theirs! So it was not too surprising when Texans elected their own county sheriff & justice system worked more like Mexican law than any northern Englishman imagined! But soon enough things started changing when settlers began forming communities/ranches courtesy of Perry Miller who had come east looking for land north of San Antonio where he could build factories! He organized someinto town meetings & began pushing for more formal government structures within his new community! This led directly to how we know our current form today: We have a county sheriff (who actually runs our county), justices court (which handles criminal cases), laws passed by special missions groups such as [the El Paso Constitutional Convention],& much more besides all because Texans felt they needed something better than just another Mexican sidekick administered by Mexicans!!! It didn’t take long tho before Mexicans realized they had been taken advantage of & decided they wanted their own government too!!!!! Some debates over annexing other counties ensued but ultimately Texan feelings prevailed (& most Texans still call themselvesTexans today!). Eventually many German immigrants arrived creating businesses in various industries including education; banking; oil exploration; construction; farming etc.; making conditions much easier for Anglo-Saxon farmers but causing tension between Germans & Mexicans especially during times such as prohibition era during 1930s!!! Finally <1920>,with help from US Army planners<& local businessmen> Planters managedto get water supplies diverted away from Presidioitol building thereby allowing Mexicano workers working on military projects access irrigated plots outside city limits without fearOf being deported!! All good things ended WWII tho……….. so although events leading up til then caused lots OF upset⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠¬ we all kinda sorta got used to it 😁😊
