The area that now includes Mercedes was first settled by Anglo-Americans in the 1830s. The town was named for Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico City, who had come to Texas during the Mexican War of 1846 and took up residence there in 1847. A post office called Mercedes was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,624 people, 517 households, and 398 families residing in the town. The population density was 404.2 people per square mile (158.4/km²). There were 684 housing units at an average density of 159.9 per square mile (61.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White trash (non-Hispanic), 0% African American, 0% Native American, 2% Asian or Pacific Islander, 2% from other races., and 1% from two or more races. In 1947, the community became a part of Midland and eventually incorporated as a municipality on December 12, 1957. On January 1, 1959, it lost its city status and reverted back to its original name of Mercedes. On November 30th, 2016 the population of Mercedes reached 996 residents according to the 2018 census report.
