Mcallen is a town in and the county seat of Coleman County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The prairie and mountain ranges that make up much of west Texas are named after fur traders and settlers who traveled through these parts in the 1800s. One such person was John Houstoun, who founded what is now Mcallen in 1836. In 1860, George Wickersham purchased the land where Mcallen stands from Houstoun for $3 per acre (although he paid cash). A post office called Houstoun was established there in 1872, but it was discontinued in 1903. In 1907, a group of men from Midland began settling around what is now Friday Field on East Commerce Street. They named their community Friday because it had been their day off since early morning until they arrived at work that morning. The town grew rapidly; by 1912 its population had reached 2,500 people and it became an incorporated municipality that year. By 1916 its population had grown to 3,000 people and it became a full-time county seat with voting rights within Coleman County The first school opened in 1915; however, before long Friday Field had become too large for all the students and residents to attend together so a new high school building was erected on West Loop Road east of town in 1922 which served as catalyst for further growth During World War II many businesses closed down due to rationing; however most Main Street still functioned without disruption as schools were open during wartime while also serving as civilian bases housing troops barracks etc

The city was founded in 1867 by John M. McAllen and named for him. In 1881, it became a county seat and until 1911 was also the capital of Hudspeth County. The town grew rapidly after railroads arrived to provide transportation to settlers in what is now Mcallen Township (now Lakewood), north of Fort Worth. By 1930, when Hudspeth County merged with neighboring Travis County, Mcallen had more than 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. More than two-thirds of all workers were employed in manufacturing or services; most industries included construction and automotive manufacturing as well as some retail trade. Growth slowed during World War II but resumed following the war's end; by 1970, employment had shrunk to 10% of its pre-war level due to declines in manufacturing and service jobs associated withBaby Boomer retirements and suburbanization. However, growth resumed during the 1990s as new subdivisions went up along I-10 east from downtown into newly annexed areas on either side of Loop 610 W., which led to increased development around Loop 610 N.; today’s merchants still report high levels of economic activity around this arterial corridor despite its lack of mass transit access
