In 1836, McDowell County was founded by Austin Hume and other pioneers. The county seat was at Craneville until the creation of Mcallen in 1883. The name originated from the phrase "Halt for a Name" because it was thought that a new town would be named after General Sam Houston. At first, nothing was done to promote the new town and people simply called it Craneville. When land became available for farming in what is now McLennan County, a millinery store owner named Mrs. Auld purchased 1,000 acres of land in 1842. She began to build a gristmill on her property that would become one of the most important in McLennan County. The mill helped to make this area an important center for agriculture and commerce. Another early development in McLennan County was ranching which led to the founding of many small towns around Craneville including Slaughtertown (later renamed Tomball), Clearwater, San Angelo, Beaumont and Potterton (now Palestine). These towns were quickly replaced by larger towns as agricultural production increased and railroads were built through the area. The population of McLennan County peaked at over 100,000 in 1910 but declined rapidly due to various factors such as World War I and economic recession. However, since then there have been modest increases in population due largely to immigration from Latin America and Asia which has contributed greatly to growth throughout the years. The current population size is about 57,000 with an estimated future growth potential of 10-15%. Mcallen is located just south of Lubbock on State Highway 66 between Sherman Oaks Boulevard and I-10 east of Amarillo off FM 676 north of Canyon Lake
The town of Mcallen, Texas was founded in 1836 by General Zachary Taylor. The town was named after the then-extant Indian village of Mahlon, which had been abandoned during the Mexican War. The first post office in Mcallen was established on May 6, 1837. In 1846, the Mexican-American War began and Mcallen became a part of Mexico. Texan General Sam Houston invaded Mexico and defeated Mexican forces at the Battles of San Jacinto and Alamo. As a result, Houston became president of Mexico and the new country's first native American president. After Houston's death in 1851, his vice president James Kenedy took over as president until he was elected to succeed Houston in1857. On April 12th of that year, Kenedy ceded Texas to United States via an act of Congress known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
