Mcallen is a town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General James McAllen who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as military governor of West Texas. The first post office in Mcallen opened on May 2, 1874. Located on the Llano River near Amarillo, Mcallen became an important rail center in East Texas during the late 19th century due to its location just east of the railroad tracks that connected Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. In 1910, Humble Oil Company founder John Gee donated land to build a refinery and hotel on what is now U Street NW in downtown Mcallen. The company built two oil refineries - one at 8th and Elm Streets (now Lamar Boulevard) and another at 24th and Elm Streets - with a total output of 350 million barrels of oil products per year by 1918. In 1923, Gee sold his interest in Humble Oil to Texaco for $1 billion dollars USD making it one of the largest energy companies ever created. The city's economy shifted from manufacturing to services when Texaco merged with American Express Companies in 1984 to form Texaco/Amex Corporation which then merged into ExxonMobil Corporation in 2001. At its peak production capacity (2005), Amex Corporation employed over 60,000 people within 5 miles of its corporate headquarters located on I-35W north of downtown Houston . However since then economic conditions have deteriorated significantly withinTexaco/Amex Corporation as global competition has increased fuel prices while lower oil prices have hurt profits

It also housed soldiers during times of conflict with Native Americans. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Fort Worth was renamed Arlington Heights after Robert E Grant, one of Ulysses S Grant’s generals during his military campaigns in Georgia and Tennessee. In 1876, Arlington Heights became part of Mcallen when it was annexed by the city limits. At this point in time, Mcallen had about 1,000 citizens compared to Arlington Heights’s 10-15 thousand residents. By 1900, however, both towns had reached their peak population counts with around 12-14 thousand residents each; however growth slowed down after World War I due to economic reasons (the war caused an increase in imports which created joblessness). After World War II ended there was another lull before increased growth resumed between 1960-1980 due to new technology trends (the early days of computer usage). However since then there have been periodic relocations (eager parents moving away for jobs or schools) until current day where Mcallen has a total population below 15K people again reflecting its roots as an agricultural community settled primarily by families looking for fertile land along riverbankside Wasatch Front streams – irrigated through irrigation ditches dating back hundreds if not thousands years!
The city of Mcallen, Texas was founded in 1884 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother-in-law, James Meredith. The town was named for General Stephen Austin who fought in the Mexican-American War. The site of today's city was a cattle ranch called Rancho Cabora which served as the original capital oftx County from 1881 to 1912. In 1912, the county seat moved to Houston and Mcallen became a ghost town.
