In 1876, the town of Mcallen was incorporated and named in honor of General Sam Houston. The first gun battle in the area took place on November 2, 1876 when a group of Texas Rangers led by Colonel James Bowie attacked Mexican forces at Cerro Gordo Ranch. In what is now considered to be one of the most dramatic gunfights in Texas history, Bowie scored a deadly hit on Mexico’s General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna with his Colt revolver. The Battle of Blanco Canyon also took place near Mcallen in 1880. A contingent from the 1st Infantry Regiment (later called the 6th) fought against elements of Mexico’s Army under Pancho Villa. Casualties were high with over 60% killed or wounded. Villa retreated after suffering heavy losses and no successful attacks were made against him for three years. In 1896, Major John A. Sutherland opened up shop at 455 Main Street in what is now known as Sutherland's Storefront Museum complex – one of only two gun shops open during that time period statewide outside Fort Worth, TX. In 1898–99, Major Sutherland conducted an experiment with using live rounds instead of inert shells to fire cannonballs at targets far away from any human observers while stationed at San Jacinto Battlefield National Monument northwest of Austin – one of several WWI experiments conducted by American military leaders across the country during that war era
Just over an hour north of Austin, in the small town of Mcallen, Texas stands a monument to one of the most dramatic chapters in the history of the Lone Star State. In 1935, three men walked into a local bank and pulled out handguns and began shooting indiscriminately at anyone they saw. The rampage that followed is now known as the San Antonio Massacre. Nine people were killed and twenty-four were injured before authorities able to subdue the gunmen. It was one of the deadliest incidents in Texas history, and it left a lasting mark on the state's memory. The tragedy spawned not only a sweeping law enforcement response but also a new generation of Texans who had to learn how to deal with violence on their own streets. And it has instilled pride in Mcallen residents in everything from their police department to their military service. Today, San Antonio remains one of America's safest cities and its businesses are some of its most successful. Yet despite all that has been accomplished here, there remain some scars from that fateful day still visible today. One such memorial is located just outside town at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery: A large statute dedicated to those lost during what would become known as "the Great American Gun War." At 3 feet tall by 4 feet wide, it is one of Texas' largest tourist attractions and provides visitors with an up-close view of how firearms can play an important role in our history - both positive and negative - while also illustrating just how much violence can touch us all within easy reach.

In 1898, the US Navys Department of Ordnance developed a program to improve the accuracy and lethality of artillery fires by using small-caliber guns. The first successful trials were conducted with .50 calibers, but soon became evident that this type of gun was not sufficiently accurate for battlefield use. To address this shortfall, the Navy began development of a new gun caliber – the .22 caliber – which proved to be more accurate and reliable than earlier rounds. This new caliber quickly became popular among military forces around the world, and it continues to play an important role in artillery fire today.
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was organized and a new county was created in central Texas. named Mcallen County after General Sam Houston's brother-in-law, James W. McAllen. The first post office in this new county was established in 1837, and it remained in operation until 1884. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down the courthouse in Mcallen County because they believed that its garrison had failed to surrender at Appomattox Court House. The courthouse was rebuilt and operations continued until 1954. During World War II, the United States government leased land near Nacogdoches for use as an airbase from Japan. This area became known as "McAllen Ranch" due to its proximity to the airport. The military operated a radar station here for many years before it closed in 1991. Today, much of this land is occupied by a shopping mall called "Mall of America". The town of alcalde (later renamed Brownsville) began growth around the Waterford Hotel on Commerce Street which served as headquarters for several businesses including Jardine & Mathews Tobacco Co., Wells Fargo Bank & Trust Company, and First National Bank of Dallas before it burned down in 1908. A new downtown began growing up around what is now Midtown San Antonio and included such luminaries as oil magnate Clint Murchison and banker Julius Rosenwald Jr.. The town of Mcallen, Texas was founded in 1836 by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his band of Texans. The town was named for Captain James H. McIntosh, who served with Méndez in the Mexican-American War. In 1851, the railroad arrived in Mcallen and started to grow the town. The first store opened in 1853 and by 1861, there were 10 businesses operating in Mcallen. There were also three churches at that time: First Baptist Church (founded 1862), Methodist Episcopal Church (1863), and Presbyterian Church (1864). By 1865, there were 30 businesses operating in Mcallen with a population of 1,500 people. In 1870, the post office was moved from San Antonio to McALLEN and began serving the community until it closed in 1953. In 1930, an airfield was built near McALLEN to support military aviation activity during World War II. After the war ended, the airfield became inactive and is now used as a park. The town also built a hospital which still stands today on Wilson Street near downtown - this hospital is known as Hospital de la Americas de McALLEN or "Hospital America" for short.
