Mcallen is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Brazos River. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of Midland County. The name "Mcallen" comes from early Spanish settlers' use of the word "máchal" meaning "a place where cotton can be gathered." The first post office in Mcallen was established in 1887, and named for General James Fenton McAllen, who served as governor of Texas from 1893 to 1897 and as United States Minister to Spain from 1898 to 1901. The community's history begins with cattle drives that crossed the Brazos River each way during 1857-1858. By 1860, there were five businesses in Mcallen - two hotels, one grocery store and four stagecoaches servicing it - all owned by men associated withBuena Vista rancho (later Rancho Viejo). A wagon road led eastward from Buena Vista about 9 miles (14 km) south of town on an elevation known as Hill 822 which overlooks present-day downtown Mcallen; this road later became FM 965 (now US 281). In 1872 Marshal John Waddell organized a Unionist militia company called the San Patricio Rangers to resist Mexican military forces invading Texas during Reconstruction; they were unsuccessful and disbanded soon afterwards. MacAllens support for President Andrew Johnson's re-election campaign helped him win that year's election against incumbent Democrat Tildale Coleman; shortly after taking office Johnson ordered federal troops into Texas to quash any insurrectionary efforts within his state by Confederate sympathizers. In 1900 local residents founded what would become Midland University; it opened its doors on October 15, 1903 with twenty-one students studying engineering and law under three presidents: Arthur Swayne (1903-1907), Gustavus Meineke (1907-1911), and Willis Hulbert ('H' 1911-1920). In addition to Midland University, other important institutions located in or around McALLEN include St Mary’s Catholic School (founded 1907), Our Lady Of The Assumption Catholic Church (founded 1909), Baylor University Baptist College & Seminary (founded 1912), United Methodistchurch / First Methodist Episcopal Church (opened 1913), All Souls Unitarian Church(established 1918) and First Baptist Church(established 1923).
Mcallen began as a small ranch in 1881. The area then became the largest cotton region in Texas, and Mcallen became a center for cotton production. In the early 20th century, the town grew rapidly due to its position as an important commercial center for cattle and soybeans. By World War II, Mcallen had become one of the most important ports on the Gulf of Mexico and was known for its naval base. The town declined after the war but regained some of its former prominence in the 1960s when it became home to Texas A&M University's main campus.
