In 1836, Colonel James Fannin ordered Captain Hogg to build a new gunnery station on the Brazos River. At this location, Captain Hogg erected a two-story brick building which served as the first female Arsenal of Texas (now Richardson College). Captain John Hogg's successors continued to use this site forgunnery purposes until 1859 when they moved to Fort Sam Houston. There they continued to erect gunsights until 1861 when they were replaced by new cannons due to advances in artillery technology. During World War II, Major General George Custer used an old cannon at Fort Worth Army Air Field as his final target practice area. Mcallen, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 199 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and is included within Travis County. Mcallen's history dates back to 1836 when it was founded by husband and wife team Donelson and Emma McLennan, both residents of Galveston, TX. In 1849, after a survey found that all land east of Highway 83 would be taken from the town for railroad construction, Donelson donated all his remaining land to Mcallen as a gift in recognition for his contributions to early Texas culture and development. In 1951, Donelson's grandson Harold Crouch became Mayoralty seeking re-election on an anti-corruption platform which called for increased spending on community services such as libraries and parks; this program led to McFarlane being chosen as City Manager in 1978 replacing retiring Mayor John Slattery. McFarlane also served two terms as Travis County Commissioner (1991-1994) before becoming mayoralty candidate again in 2002 In 2006 then current Mayor Lee Harbers named McFarlane Director of Economic Development until his appointment as Travis County Controller in 2011 while he still serves as Mayoralty candidate After years of planning by City Manager Craig McClendon with an eye towards improving transportation access including expanding light rail service into downtown McAlester through downtown annexation plans along with new neighborhoods near Interstate 15 (I15), express bus lanes will finally connect downtown with I15 directly which should free up more room inside Downtown McAlester for shops and businesses growth; this long term vision has been stalled due to lack of funding however recent news articles indicate that City Manager McClendon may have given up on it entirely

Neuman took over as mayor of Mcallen in 1912 and served until 1916 when he was succeeded by J. B. Hays (later congressman from Kansas). In 1922 Hays' widow became Mayor again after her husband's death; she held that office until her death in 1928. In 1940 Clyde Silliman became City Manager after previous management changes including one by then-Mayor Beaumont Hogg III which led to public demonstrations. The first white people to set foot in what is now Mcallen, Texas were Juan Bautista de Garza and his brother Antonio. They arrived in 1836 and named their new land after themselves, McAllen County. The first post office was established at Goliad in 1840. In 1851, the county seat was moved to Veracruz City. By 1870, the population of Mcallen had grown to over 1,000 residents and it became a railroad town. The townspeople built a frame courthouse and jail in 1872 and began hosting elections for county officials. The railroad destroyed most of the original buildings inMcALLEN BY THE ROADWAY - A HISTORICAL GUIDE (2006) but some remain standing today including the old depot which is now used as a library building. In 1898, the city of Veracruz City merged with Mcallen County and the name reverted back to Veracruz City.
