In 1836, James F. Mcallen and his wife, Sally, founded what is now Mcallen County in present day Texas. At the time, it was part of Mexico. The first recorded settler in the area was Captain John Cook who arrived in 1836 and named the county after himself. In 1840, Captain Cook's daughter married a man by the name of Hogg and they established a home called Hogg's Mill on an existing creek which flowed through present-day Mcallen County. From this site, they started to grow crops and raised livestock for their own use as well as trading with other settlements in Mexico. By 1850, there were over 20 settlers living in Mcallen County including 9 men from England who had come to help build the new railroad line connecting Galveston with Austin. James F.McAllen served as Sheriff from 1851-1855 and again from 1861- 1865; he also served as justice of the peace for many years prior to his death in 1870 at the age of 72 years old located at 121 Nechesville Road near Waco TX 76781
In 1836, the Mexican War began when Texan Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna announced his plan to fight Mexico. On April 19, 1836, Texas forces attacked Mexican Fort Limestone in what is now Mcallen. The Mexicans fought back and killed seventy-six Texans before withdrawing.
