The town of Mcallen, Texas was founded in 1875 by John S. Hogg and his brother-in-law James W. Hogg. The first post office was established in this town on July 6, 1875. In 1893, the name of the town changed to McKinney after Representative William McKinley who had been elected President that year. In 1899, the population of McKinney reached 4,000 and it became a city in 1903. The first municipal building was built in 1907 and served as the seat of government until 1916 when a new building was constructed at what is now Loop 610 West and US Highway 183. The city was annexed by Dallas in 1907 and its population rose to over 100,000 by 1914 when it became a consolidated municipality with Dallas. In 1995, the City of McKinney voters passed an ordinance changes to add an eighth ward which represented most working class residents within its borders outside of downtown Dallas John S Hogg started out as a small farmer living near present day McCullen Lake on section 15 (now Slaughter) northeast of downtown Dallas. He leased land from cattle ranchers for grazing purposes and soon developed into a successful real estate developer based in McKinney with interests including ranching, farming, heavy manufacturing plants such as foundry works and oil refineries throughout North Texas during the late 1800s-early 1900s
Mcallen is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,957 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Mcallen" comes from the Creek word "mallah," meaning "a place where cotton can be grown." McAllen was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836 and named for General James H. McAllen, who had evacuated Texas during the Mexican–American War and served as commander of troops under Ulysses S. Grant in thewestern theater of that conflict. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1849, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the creek near present day McAllen; these mills processed wood from local trees until 1870 when a railroad came through and transportation became much easier. A store was built on Main Street in 1876; it closed in 1951 but is still standing as an example of early 20th century architecture. A bank was built on Elm Street in 1951 also, but it failed and all its assets were sold to First National Bank later that year. In 1957, Mcallen voters passed an ordinance establishing their own school district which would remain effective until 1978 when it merged with Travis County's system. At that time, Mcallen Schools District #1 went through a large expansion which included building new schools (High School #1 & 2) on Pecan Road just east of I-10 west of FM 620 while also renovating existing buildings including two elementary schools (Linda Vista Elementary School & Belleview Elementary School) along with creating three special education classrooms/ offices (Kindergarten thru 6th grade), one library/information services center/audiovisual lab., one science laboratory/laboratory Resource Center(Specially designed for agriculture students), four parksincluding one located off I-10 south of town limitsand five water systems including two wells before becoming extinct after having no pupils or residents within its boundaries since 1978
