In 1835, Alvarado County was organized from parts of neighboring Nueces and Webb Counties. The first post office in Mcallen was established on July 1, 1836. The county seat was moved from San Antonio to Mcallen in 1849. In 1850, the population of Mcallen was 536 and it had a total land area of 22 square miles.
