Downtown McAllen experienced rapid growth during World War II due to military activity and an influx of civilians from nearby Fort Sam Houston which had become an Army post after being acquired by Mexico in 1898 as part of their war for independence from Spain. The post survived until 1898 but then became an airbase used by both United States forces against Japan during World War II and later by Taiwan's Republic of China army during their civil war (1946-1947). During these years much industry relocated here including oil refineries, munitions plants, manufacturing plants etc.; many old structures still stand today including several hotels/motels dating back to the 1920s-30s when business boomed thanks to Interstate 10 running through town just south of downtown along Slaughter Road

Mcallen is a town in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The name comes from strength and fortitude (mallaik), meaning "to protect." The first European to visit the area now known as Mcallen was Hernando de Soto in 1541 during his expedition along the Rio Grande. He named it after Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. A post office called Mcallen was established in 1879, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1915, James Fenton built a small cotton gin on what is now FM 1625 east of town. The mill started production of cottonseed oil for local Texans in 1922 and continued operations until 1951. In 1954, Fenton sold his interest in the mill to The First National Bank of Fort Worth for $1 million dollars cash. At that time Fort Worth became one of the few large banks located within 10 miles of downtown Dallas/Houston metropolitan area without its own branch there! In 1966, Tom Dealey shot John Lennon outside Lee Harvey Oswald's apartment building near Houston Street and Elm Street NW near Goodlettsville Road NW just before 7 p.m., killing him and wounding four others including Drs. Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy Jr., and Malcolm X all fatally shot by Dallas police snipers on April 5th while they were standing on Leeward Drive NE facingown with their hands up! That day also marked America's deadliest city Sniper shooting ever!
The McAllen Massacre took place on October 26, 1881, when a group of Texan ranch hands were killed by two Mexican soldiers. The event is considered one of the most notorious massacres in Texas history.
