Marshall was a small town in Marshall County, Texas, United States until the early 21st century. The population was only 1,100 in 1930. It is now a ghost town due to the oil industry's declined fortunes. The first references to Marshall are from 1848 when it was part of Indian Territory and it is not known if this refers to present-day Marshall or an earlier location. The town likely started as a logging community with sawmills located on the banks of the Red River. By 1870, there were four stores and two post offices in the community. The population increased by 100% during Reconstruction when Union troops burned down most of what remained of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's holdings in Texas after his surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. In 1892, Judge James Witherspoon granted homesteads to 8 white men and 2 black men who would work them for 10 years without compensation; these "Cotton Fields Grantees" became Marshalls for life. Settlement continued through World War I with many refugees coming from eastern Arkansas and Missouri fleeing into Texas during that time period because they could not find land anywhere else in the Lone Star State. Many children were born here including Oral Roberts University's football coach Bob Knight and current Baylor Bears quarterback Bryce Petty During World War II Marshall lost almost all its residents with just over 100 people remaining by 1945 when hostilities ended; however, many businesses continued operating such as Lumberjacks & Loggers Supply Company which still stands today outside of town limits today selling lumber products from their original store building which still stands (now used as apartments). The decline of oil production throughout much ofTexas beginning around 1970 may have been one factor contributing to Marshall's loss of population as well although no direct evidence exists to support this claim In fact some say thatMarshall may have been completely abandoned even before then due to high levels of asbestososis caused by working in said dirty oil industry . With only a few buildings remaining standing post-1980s economic conditions have led to an increase in tourismISMeaning more people visit Marshal each year but very little has changed since then other than visitation rates lagging behind those seen elsewhere
Marshall, Texas was founded by Colonel James Marshall in 1836. The city is named for him and it became an American town in 1848. The county seat of Marshall County was moved from New Braunfels to Marshall in 1870.
